Powder Coating Machine: How to Choose a Complete Set

A powder coating machine is not one unit — it is a set: guns, control unit, powder feed and recovery, reciprocators and conveyor. Size it backwards from daily output and workpiece type, or you end up with a gun that outruns the line.

What a Powder Coating Machine Consists Of

Separate a single gun from a complete set first. One gun alone leaves throughput and consistency to the operator; a set locks gun distance, travel speed and recovery.

  • Gun system: manual or automatic guns plus control unit — gun count sets the cycle time per part
  • Powder feed: hopper, feed centre or venturi pump — decides whether output stays steady
  • Recovery: cyclone or cartridge — decides powder utilisation and emission compliance
  • Motion: reciprocator, elevator or robot — decides film thickness from one end to the other
  • Conveyor and curing: overhead chain, oven and curing profile

Choose by Daily Output: Work Out the Cycle First

  • Under 200 parts per day: 1–2 manual guns are enough; budget goes into gun and powder feed
  • 200–800 parts per day: mainly manual, with automatic guns at fixed positions
  • Over 800 parts per day: automatic guns on a reciprocator; count guns from line speed
  • Over 500 parts per batch in one colour: an automatic line pays back — few colour changes

Choose by Workpiece: Long Parts, Sheet Metal, Small Mixed Batches

  • Long parts (profiles, pipes, guardrails): move the part, keep the gun fixed — vertical line or reciprocator
  • Sheet metal (appliances, cabinets): appearance parts live or die on edge coverage; lock gun distance and voltage
  • Small parts in many colours (furniture hardware): colour change time is the hidden cost — pick an easy-to-strip powder path

What Drives the Price

Settle four things before comparing quotes, or the numbers are not comparable: gun count and grade, powder feed method, recovery method, and whether conveyor and curing are included. A gun-only quote and a full-line quote differ by an order of magnitude.

FAQ

Is a powder coating machine the same as a powder coating gun?

No. The gun is the applicator, also called an electrostatic powder coating gun. A powder coating machine usually means the complete set: guns, control unit, powder feed and recovery.

How do I estimate the capacity of a powder coating machine?

Work backwards: maximum workpiece size, then hanger spacing, then line speed, then gun count. Send us workpiece size and daily output and we will run that chain for you.

Is retrofitting an old line worth it?

It depends on the conveyor and curing oven. If those two are still serviceable, replacing guns, powder feed and recovery usually beats a new line. If not, new guns will not fix throughput.

Need a configuration worked out for your workpieces?

Send workpiece dimensions, material, daily output and the number of colours — we return an equipment list and a quote basis.
