Typical Working Conditions in This Industry

Furniture hardware (chair frames, table legs, bed frames, shelving, metal furniture frames) is characterized by:

  • Many colors; the same customer may need black, white, grey and champagne gold at the same time
  • Small batches; a few dozen to a few hundred pieces per batch is very common
  • Mixed shapes; a mix of tubes, bent tubes, stamped parts and welded parts

Why This Industry Should Not Blindly Adopt an Automatic Line

The advantage of an automatic line is stability and efficiency at large volumes with a single color. In the furniture hardware industry, color change downtime consumes the entire gain from automation.

Efficiency Levers When Manual Work Dominates

1. Shorten color change time

  • Quick-release powder hoses and quick-change hoppers bring color change down to minutes
  • Prepare several hopper sets pre-loaded by color; change color by switching hoppers
  • Build the spray booth as an easy-to-clean structure (anti-stick inner walls)

2. Constant gun travel on long parts

On long parts such as folding chair frames and table legs, manual gun travel tends to be uneven from end to end.

  • Two operators coating in sections, overlapping at the handover
  • Or use a simple fixed bracket + manual gun so the workpiece moves rather than the gun

3. Tube inner walls and recesses

  • The direction the tube opening faces affects how the field enters; change the hanging angle where necessary
  • Pre-spray recessed positions
  • Raise electrostatic voltage moderately, but watch for back ionization

Powder Selection Recommendations

In small-batch, multi-color scenarios, how color-change-friendly a powder is has nothing to do with color and everything to do with formulation:

  • Metallic-effect powders (champagne gold, sparkle silver) are noticeably more troublesome to clean at color change
  • Some powders have poor flowability and leave residue in the fluidizing hopper on small batches

If color switches are frequent, we suggest classifying colors by color change cleaning difficulty for production scheduling — switch within one color family first, then across color families.
